Research in Palliative Medicine?
- Research is the only way to constantly improve the service which we provide to our patients. Therefore, it has to be an integral part of palliative medicine. In the special circumstances of patients with far advanced diseases, it is of course essential to do research in a cautious and ethically appropriate way with utmost respect for the patients and their relatives. As is the art of palliative care, research in this area must be patient centered, interdisciplinary and multiprofessional.
Forschung in der Palliativmedizin?
 - Forschung ist die einzige Möglichkeit, um das Angebot für die Patienten stetig immer weiter zu verbessern. Daher muss Forschung integraler Bestandteil der Palliativmedizin sein. In der speziellen Situation schwerkranker und sterbender Menschen muss Forschung selbstverständlich sehr vorsichtig und ethisch vertretbar durchgeführt werden, mit dem allergrößten Respekt vor den Patienten und ihren Angehörigen. Wie auch die Kunst der palliativen Versorgung stellt Forschung in diesem Bereich den Patienten in den Mittelpunkt und muss interdisziplinär und multiprofessionell erfolgen.

Research Topics of our Department
In our department, we focus on three main aspects:
- Service delivery: What are the best structures in our health care system to deliver optimal palliative care? Are new structures such as case management in palliative care needs oriented and effective? How do we optimally teach students and post-graduates?
- Palliative Care and Neurology: Projects include both neurological symptoms as well as neurological diseases. For neuropsychiatric symptoms, we focus on paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (e.g. optimising diagnostic assays, clinical studies, animal model), but also study other symptoms such as neuropathic pain or confusion. With the future development of palliative medicine it is important to see which elements of palliative care for oncological patients can be transferred to patients with non-oncological diseases, and which have to be adapted. We focus on disorders such as brain tumors or multiple sclerosis.
- End-of-life care: As we all want to have a "good death", we have to study what that means and how we can acchieve this. This includes aspects such as advance directives, what is meant by "death wish", the question of active euthanasia, and how to deliver optimal end-of-life care.

- Use of L-Polamidon in neuropathic pain symdromes (funded in part by Sanofi Aventis AG)
- Verbesserung der ambulanten Versorgung unheilbar kranker Patienten (supported by the Koeln Fortune Program Faculty of Medicine, University of Cologne)
